Department of Geomorphology
About The Department
Geomorphology is fundamentally regarded as the scientific discipline focused on comprehending the Earth's surface and the processes that have shaped it over time, both in contemporary and historical contexts. This field also encompasses the study of distinct landforms across different environments, such as desert, coastal, mountainous, and fluvial geomorphology. Despite the diversity of these sub-disciplines, they are interconnected through the overarching field of geomorphology. Established in 1937 (1327 H.S.). The Department of Geomorphology stands as one of the oldest geography departments in Iran and is recognized as one of the most esteemed units within the field nationwide. It was originated as a distinct branch of physical geography, recognized as one of the two primary sub-disciplines within geography that aims to comprehend the processes and patterns of the natural environment. The Department boasts a team of seasoned lecturers specializing in geomorphology and its practical applications, which encompass geomorphology, and environmental sciences. Research conducted within the Department of Geomorphology is predominantly interdisciplinary, employing a systems approach that incorporates a variety of methodologies and techniques. The teaching focus within the Department primarily revolves around geomorphology, emphasizing regional scales or national contexts. Within this Department, geomorphologists aim to investigate the history and dynamics of landforms, as well as to forecast future alterations, utilizing a blend of field observations, physical experiments, and numerical modeling techniques.
Programs
The Department offers robust undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with its graduates significantly contributing to the application of geomorphological theories and methodologies in addressing human and environmental challenges. It aims to achieve excellence in geomorphology, which has inspired numerous postgraduate students from both the Department and other planning institutions to seek to enhance their understanding. Consequently, the Department has progressively expanded the academic foundation of its professional programs, preparing graduates and majors who are well-equipped to address a variety of geomorphological challenges and concepts, with a particular emphasis on certain specialized fields. The Department fosters a welcoming and supportive environment that promotes effective teaching and learning, characterized by cordial interactions among students, staff, and visitors.
PhD Opportunities
The Department of Geomorphology, recognized for its commitment to influencing academic and policy discussions at the national level, seeks to attract dedicated students interested in engaging in innovative and advanced research at the Ph.D. level. The Ph.D. program has been in operation since 1993, and the enrollment of postgraduate students has steadily increased over the years.
Master's Program
Since 1992, the department has offered a master's program that delivers both professional and academic training through various pathways focused on geomorphological topics.
Bachelor's Program
The Department provides a Bachelor of Arts in Geomorphology, which builds on the established strengths of its geomorphological curriculum while enabling students to explore a broader spectrum of geographical issues. This program familiarizes students with key geomorphological and environmental trends that influence both natural and human-altered landscapes today. It encourages the development of theoretical and conceptual thinking alongside the acquisition of practical skills, equipping graduates for diverse career opportunities.
