About the Faculty of Planning and Environmental Sciences

Geography is one of the oldest majors of the University of Tabriz and has the+ same history as the establishment of the university. Before the Islamic Revolution in Iran, this major consisted of two branches of physical geography and human geography. After the revolution, the human geography major was renamed to geography and urban planning.

Until 1988, geography majors were part of the Faculty of Literature and Humanities. With the increase in the number of majors, this faculty was divided into two faculties of Literature and Foreign Languages and Humanities and Social Sciences. The geography majors were placed under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
In the summer of 2012, with the university's approval, geography majors, along with architecture and history majors, were established under the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Architecture, as well as law and social sciences majors under the Faculty of Law. The Faculty of Geography was established in December 2012 with three educational groups of geomorphology, Meteorology, and geography and urban planning.

Considering that the name geography alone did not reflect the mission of this major, in February 2014, the university's board of trustees agreed to change the name of the faculty to Geography and Planning. In September 2017, the faculty's name was changed again to Planning and Environmental Sciences.
